Give Hockey a Try on Aug 18, 2018:  Reserve My Spot >

The NCWHL holds “Give Hockey a Try Day” (GHATD) twice a year prior to the new season starting to give women with no playing experience an introduction to ice hockey. Absolutely zero experience in skating or hockey is needed! Full gear and on-ice coaching through light drills are provided. Participants then enjoy a fun, controlled scrimmage towards the end of the session. Cost is $25 a session.

After GHATD, participants are invited to shop at our used Gear Sale where lightly-used, donated gear is sold for a fraction of the cost of buying new. This is a great way for new players to get into the sport on a budget! Then stay and watch a Green division game. Donations of used equipment are always welcome.

Volunteers needed for GHATD

Interested in helping out at GHATD? We need lots of help from getting newbies dressed to hit the ice to setting up for the popular Gear Sale event after. Stick around to cheer on the skaters as they scrimmage for the first time ever! Come join us introduce our favorite sport to new friends.

Give Hockey a Try Day Recap

Give Hockey a Try Day (GHATD) introduced over 50 participants to ice hockey on February 3rd and 24th. Winter Olympic years have always injected an added enthusiasm for GHATD as women’s hockey is spotlighted on the international stage. None have been more significant than this year with the smashing success of the U.S. National Team as they took gold in the tournament.

NBC Sports reached out to our League to do a story on this event and spent the day with us from set-up to tear-down. They chronicled the day with one of their reporters participating on-ice. During the first portion of the session, skaters were led through some light intro-to-hockey drills. Then they participated in a controlled, fun scrimmage to show off their newly acquired skills. Afterwards, skaters rushed to the Gear Sale to get equipped for the upcoming season. All equipment was donated by League members and sold for $10 a piece. We parted with so much gear that we are now in need of another collection. And so far, we’ve signed up 27 new skaters and counting!

Over 40 League volunteers from across all divisions came out to support GHATD: helping skaters get dressed, coaching, recruiting, selling gear, and cheering on the participants as they skated in their first scrimmage ever. As always, a huge thank you goes out to all our volunteers for helping us put on yet another successful GHATD!

For the Love of Women’s Hockey

The NCWHL was able to participate this year in a special hockey event featuring a tilt between the US Women’s National Team and their arch rivals from up north. As exciting as the game was, it was equally fun to see all of the familiar faces from our League in attendance. Everyone was thrilled to have women’s hockey right in our backyard!

We held a recruiting event at the game to reach out to the prospective skaters and the response was overwhelmingly positive. League members came by in NCWHL jerseys to support the cause. We passed out fliers and got the word out about Give Hockey a Try Day. We hope to see some of that interest translate into more participants at GHATD and League registrations next season.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who came out and spent time with us at this recruiting event. Without you, none of this could have been possible!

NCWHL Scrimmage at SAP Center for Volunteers

To thank the NCWHL, Katie Holmgren/USA Hockey organized a scrimmage at SAP Center in San Jose. We invited all of our dedicated League volunteers, captains and coaches for this special one-time event.

Upon arrival, we found 50+ girls in hockey gear running around in the lobby reminding us that our work promoting women’s hockey in the Bay Area has gone a long way! It was a great kickoff to the next day’s exciting game between the USA and Canadian women’s national teams. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers! Without your help, the NCWHL wouldn’t be where we are today.
