Helpful Reminders

  • Please get to the rink early. This will allow you to get your device on WiFi and get the scoreboard set up. This will give you time to troubleshoot the scoreboard if you run into any issues.
  • If you ever need the Ref to help you with anything or to get their attention if the box isn’t working or you haven’t typed something in correctly, press the “HORN” button quickly just once and they will come over. Please wait for a stoppage of play. Do not do this in the middle of play.

Running the Scoreboard

Before the game
  • Turn on and prepare scoreboard for game
    • If the scoreboard isn’t working for some reason, please contact rink personnel to help. Some of the referees know how the boxes work, but not all. Do not rely on them for help. If for some reason, you cannot get the scoreboard to work, please keep track of the time with a watch or phone. The standard time, if you are using something that won’t start and stop like a stopwatch, is three 20 minute, run time periods. Sometimes, the referees will keep track on the ice because they have a whistle to stop play when the time runs out. Not all referees bring their phones with them or wear watches, so if you have one, too, that would be helpful.
  • Verify captains have updated their rosters
    • Each captain should have updated their roster online prior to the game.
    • And the goalie who is playing for them.
  • Get referee names
    • Be sure to fill in the Refs’ names on the scoresheet as well as any subs/jersey numbers and goalies/jersey numbers.

During the game
  • On Scoresheet
    • Shots-on-Goal: SOG means any puck that would have gone in the net if the goalie wasn’t there. If it touches the goalie, but it would not have gone in the net if the goalie wasn’t there, it does not count as a SOG. If someone shoots a puck in the air and the goalie catches it with her glove and the glove is outside of the net/post area, this is NOT a SOG. Please mark the end of each period with a horizontal line to differentiate SOG’s between periods. The goalies and their schedulers rely on this information, so be sure to be accurate.
    • Goals: Write the time of the game (what is showing on the clock), the period, and the numbers of the players credited with the goals and assists in the proper place.
    • Penalties: Write the time of the game (what is showing on the clock), the period, the number of the player receiving the penalty, and the penalty called in the proper place.
      • Referees will typically only give you a signal. If you don’t know what the signal means, ask them.
      • If a goal is scored by the team on the power play, the penalized player comes out, and the remaining penalty time comes off the clock. Refer to scoreboard operations on how to remove the remaining time. If you can’t get it done, don’t stress out about it.
  • On Scoreboard
    • While players and referees think the scoreboard is the most important, it’s actually more important to get the information on the scoresheet correctly. You can always fix the score on the board later. This is especially true with penalties. You will feel pressure to get the penalty on the board, but get the information on the scoresheet first so that you don’t forget anything. Scoresheet first, then the scoreboard.
  • Keep and track time of the game.
    • This league does stop-time games. This means start the clock when the puck drops, and stop the clock when the whistle blows.
    • In case of ties, determine if there is time for overtime. If the game is tied and there are at lease 5 minutes remaining in our ice slot, then a five minute, run-time overtime period will be played to determine a winner. There are NO clock stoppages, even if the ref blows the whistle for penalties or icing. If it remains tied after this period, the game will end in a tie, even if there is still time in our slot.
    • In Redwood City, if the rink staff or previous non-NCWHL slot causes our slot to start late, please write the actual time we were allowed to start on the top of the scoresheet and let your supervisor know.
      • We have 1.25 hour slots. This means regardless of the time we were allowed on the ice, we have an hour and 15 minutes. Period. Do not let the rink staff or refs tell you otherwise. If they tell you something different, please tell your supervisor.
      • So, if we are supposed to start at 6:15pm, and the Zamboni from the previous slot doesn’t get off the ice until 6:25pm, write 6:25pm on the top of the sheet and let your supervisor know. This game time will go until 7:40pm, even if overtime is needed.
