2018 Holiday Tournament

Dear NCWHLers,

We’re pleased to announce that we will once again be holding an NCWHL Holiday Tournament at Nazareth Ice Oasis in Redwood City  and San Mateo! Most games will be held in San Mateo with each team playing 1 game in RWC. This is a great opportunity to meet other players in the league, practice your skills in a totally fun and relaxed environment, and keep your skating fresh over the long holiday and new years break.

We’ll be fielding 4 mixed-level teams and we’ll take care of creating the teams, so all you have to do is show up and skate.

The Details

• Spots are available on a first come, first served basis, up to 52 skaters (maximum of 13 skaters per team). The tournament is available to NCWHL skaters in the Winter 2018/19 season.

• The games will be held on Friday December 28, Saturday December 29, and Sunday December 30. Each skater will get 4 games. The tentative schedule includes round robin games early evening Friday and mid-day and evening on Saturday and a consolation and championship game mid-morning on Sunday.

• We will play at the Nazareth Ice Oasis rink in Redwood City and San Mateo.  FYI, Ice Oasis is also hosting beginner and intermediate tournaments for their co-ed Rec leagues.

• Players should bring both their dark and light NCWHL jerseys.

• The cost is $140, paid directly to Ice Oasis on the day of your first game (cash, check, and credit cards accepted).

• You can designate ONE player as your tournament “buddy” and you’ll be guaranteed to be on the same team as that person.

Goalies

We also need goalies (and goalies play free)! If you’re interested please indicate “Goalie” in the Google Form.

Hockey 101: Beginners Welcome!

So, you’ve never given a single thought to the idea of playing ice hockey. Maybe you’ve been ice skating a couple of times in the past. Maybe you’re a fan of watching the pros on TV. But playing?? No. Way. What if we were to convince you otherwise? NCWHL offers many resources for women to get introduced to the sport. Let us convince you!

Give Hockey a Try Day

If you’re able to join us for our bi-annual GHATD (Give Hockey a Try Day), this is a fantastic way to get over the jitters with little commitment to purchasing gear or registering for a season. This super fun event is held at San Mateo Ice Oasis. For a small registration fee, our League provides full gear plus a little bit of light on-ice coaching. Then all skaters and goalies participate in a low-key fun scrimmage to end the evening! Most skaters that participate in this event have never played before and few have much skating experience. Beginner Division

Ready to go? You tried hockey at GHATD. You got geared up. You’re ready for the next step, but you’re worried about not knowing anything about hockey, much less how to skate. Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered! NCWHL’s Green Division accepts all skaters and goalies at the beginner level from little experience to none at all. Our coaches will show you the ropes from skating, to stick-handling, to game rules. All games in Green Division are coached, too! Green offers a fun and supportive environment for complete beginners to flourish.

NCWHL Gives Back: Holiday Donation Drive

NCWHL is committed to serving our local community. Through donations, volunteer hours, and drives, we’ve been able to support children, families, and neighborhoods. We aim to participate in 2-3 drives and 5-6 community events annually. Our volunteers help represent us to the community as a group that wants to give back. NCWHL Holiday Donation Drive

The NCWHL Holiday Donation bin will be set up in San Mateo this week! We are collecting Amazon wish list items, monetary donations, and supply donations for Girls Garage in Oakland. Girls Garage empowers girls by giving them hands on carpentry, engineering, and technology skills. We’re so excited to partner with such an amazing organization!

Game FAQ: What if we don’t have a goalie?

What if we don’t have a goalie? Here is what our League policies state regarding having only one goalie (or unfortunately no goalies) in a game.

Play with 6 skaters

  • The team with no goalie can place an extra player on the ice in lieu of the goalie. However she will not have any goalie privileges, she will just be a 6th player on the ice. This means she (or anyone else on her team) cannot purposefully cover the puck. If she does this inside the crease area, it is penalty shot (or optional minor). If the puck was covered to prevent an obvious and imminent goal, a goal is awarded. If outside the crease, a delay of game penalty is called.
  • This also means that more than likely there will not be any icings against the team with 6 skaters. This is because in any game, icing is waived off if a player from the team not shooting the puck could have played it before crossing the goal line. With a 6th skater, most of the time she probably could have played it. Does this mean there are definitely no icings against the team with no goalie? (nope)
  • Refs can ask the one goalie if she wants to switch halfway through the game. If the goalie wants to, the refs will ask the captains. If the captains both agree, then the goalie will play half of the game for one team, and half for the other. The team that has the assigned goalie gets to choose which half they want the goalie. Once this format is decided on, at no time will it revert back to playing for just the one team.

Shooter Tutor

  • When the rink has a shooter tutor available, and both captains agree, the shooter tutor shall be placed on the goal frame of the team with no goalie. The tutor will not move when the teams switch ends, so one team has the tutor for 2 periods and the other has it for 1 period.
  • Same rules for covering the puck (see above) apply when the shooter tutor is on the net.

No goalies at all?

  • See six skaters, playing 6 a side for both teams, or
  • We could play pond hockey style. In some cases that is putting the net on the front of its frame and then shooting at what was the top of the net. In other cases, you can play ‘posts’ where a goal only counts if it hits a post or crossbar.
  • In either case, captains must agree.

Community Outreach: Oct & Nov Projects

We have some great opportunities for community service coming up! We’ll be volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank in October, this time at the San Jose location. We will also be playing street hockey with kids again at Sunday Friends in November. We got a special request to return!
