2019 NCWHL General Membership Meeting
This season, the Board of the NCWHL has updated policies surrounding penalties and supplemental disciplinary action.
For violations of the NCWHL Code of Responsibility, players are subject to League discipline as summarized below:
For particularly egregious violations, the Board reserves the right to employ stricter discipline than the above progression dictates. These violations, whether penalized on-ice or not, are subject to interpretation by the League’s governing body, as outlined by USA Hockey Rules.
This progression written to address those players who habitually ignore issued warnings to adjust their gameplay to that which is acceptable in our League and as a result, put other players in dangerous situations. In the past, these players have received numerous warnings; some received a suspension on the first offense. By offense, we are referring to anything which may or may not have been penalized on-ice. We needed a policy that was clear-cut on what the repercussions are when you don’t play the way this League was intended to play.
(AKA, the way we expect players to conduct themselves during game situations)
Players are responsible not only for their actions on the ice, but also for being aware of the other players on the ice and being able to act in a responsible manner for the safety of all players.
Repeated violations of the standard of play in the NCWHL will be reviewed by the Board and could be subject to suspension. Repeated violations after suspensions and additional Board review could result in expulsion from the NCWHL.
The Breakdown: What this really means has 2 parts. First, there is a responsibility on the part of the player initiating the play. You are responsible for how you play and whether your actions are intimidating or aggressive. If you are going for a puck and there are 9 players in between you and the puck, it might not be a great idea to plow through them all just to get to the puck. If you are still learning how to stop, don’t use other players as your cushion. Skate with your head up so you don’t run into other players accidentally (which is really a good hockey play anyway – the skating with your head up thing). It really doesn’t matter if you get a penalty on the play or not. You are still responsible for how you play.
The second part to this Code is the receiving end of the play. When you have a player on the ice with you that is known to use other players as bowling pins, try to avoid putting yourself in a vulnerable position when they are on the ice with you. When you see someone bearing down on you and you know they don’t like to (or can’t) stop, try not to turn your back to them and skate out of their path to protect yourself. We fully recognize that the onus should be on those players to address dangerous playing styles, but we all need to learn to protect ourselves because while checking is not allowed in our League, we are all still knowingly engaged in a physical, contact sport.
As players in this League, we should all value each other and recognize that we all need to go to work the next day with all our body parts functioning. This is in our waivers when you sign up to play. When you agree to play in the NCWHL, you agree to respect all players on the ice, including yourself.
Dear NCWHLers,
We’re pleased to announce that we will once again be holding an NCWHL Holiday Tournament at Nazareth Ice Oasis in Redwood City and San Mateo! Most games will be held in San Mateo with each team playing 1 game in RWC. This is a great opportunity to meet other players in the league, practice your skills in a totally fun and relaxed environment, and keep your skating fresh over the long holiday and new years break.
We’ll be fielding 4 mixed-level teams and we’ll take care of creating the teams, so all you have to do is show up and skate.
• Spots are available on a first come, first served basis, up to 52 skaters (maximum of 13 skaters per team). The tournament is available to NCWHL skaters in the Winter 2018/19 season.
• The games will be held on Friday December 28, Saturday December 29, and Sunday December 30. Each skater will get 4 games. The tentative schedule includes round robin games early evening Friday and mid-day and evening on Saturday and a consolation and championship game mid-morning on Sunday.
• We will play at the Nazareth Ice Oasis rink in Redwood City and San Mateo. FYI, Ice Oasis is also hosting beginner and intermediate tournaments for their co-ed Rec leagues.
• Players should bring both their dark and light NCWHL jerseys.
• The cost is $140, paid directly to Ice Oasis on the day of your first game (cash, check, and credit cards accepted).
• You can designate ONE player as your tournament “buddy” and you’ll be guaranteed to be on the same team as that person.
We also need goalies (and goalies play free)! If you’re interested please indicate “Goalie” in the Google Form.

If you’re able to join us for our bi-annual GHATD (Give Hockey a Try Day), this is a fantastic way to get over the jitters with little commitment to purchasing gear or registering for a season. This super fun event is held at San Mateo Ice Oasis. For a small registration fee, our League provides full gear plus a little bit of light on-ice coaching. Then all skaters and goalies participate in a low-key fun scrimmage to end the evening! Most skaters that participate in this event have never played before and few have much skating experience. If that sounds like you, send us a message!
You attended GHATD and now you’re hopelessly HOOKED. Getting geared up for hockey can be an expensive venture, especially if you’re not sure what to get, how to fit it, what size to wear… Let our experts help you! Our League volunteers hold a Gear Sale after each GHATD and sells gently used gear for a small fraction of the cost of buying new. It makes getting started so much easier!
Ready to go? You tried hockey at GHATD. You got geared up. You’re ready for the next step, but you’re worried about not knowing anything about hockey, much less how to skate. Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered! NCWHL’s Green Division accepts all skaters and goalies at the beginner level from little experience to none at all. Our coaches will show you the ropes from skating, to stick-handling, to game rules. All games in Green Division are coached, too! Green offers a fun and supportive environment for complete beginners to flourish.

NCWHL is committed to serving our local community. Through donations, volunteer hours, and drives, we’ve been able to support children, families, and neighborhoods. We aim to participate in 2-3 drives and 5-6 community events annually. Our volunteers help represent us to the community as a group that wants to give back. The NCWHL Holiday Donation bin will be set up in San Mateo this week! We are collecting Amazon wish list items, monetary donations, and supply donations for Girls Garage in Oakland. Girls Garage empowers girls by giving them hands on carpentry, engineering, and technology skills. We’re so excited to partner with such an amazing organization!
