2018 NCWHL Picnic & Labor Day Tournament

We held our Annual Picnic on September 1 this year at Cuesta Park in Mountain View and drew more than 70 League members out to enjoy grilled burgers, hot dogs and chicken, as well as a smorgasbord of pot-luck goodies. April Tse was the winner of the 50% off registration raffle. She also took a few pictures to commemorate the day:

In addition, 45 skaters across all four divisions participated in the Labor Day Tournament at Ice Oasis. The tournament ran from September 1 to September 3. Players played 5 games total including a playoff game and a final. All of the games were close; both playoff games went into extra time and the Championship game, which entered OT with a 0-0 tie, was decided with a crafty five-hole shootout goal by Green Division skater, Candice Nishimura!

Community Outreach: Sunday Friends

On Sunday, May 27th a group of 11 volunteers representing the League visiting Lowell Elementary School in San Jose to help teach children how to play hockey. We worked with a wonderful community based non-profit called Sunday Friends. They host classes for parents (ESL, immigration, tax workshops, etc) and utilize the local elementary school to provide the children with opportunities for art and crafts, cooking lessons, and physical activities. The families who attend earn points through their participation and are able to turn those points in for necessities such as house wares, cleaning supplies, and school supplies. We hosted a game of street hockey on the black top and had a few skills clinics going on for the youngest ones. The kids were great and so excited to get to play hockey! We were lucky enough to have just a handful of high sticks and boo boos. The executive director dropped by and asked us to come back any time!

Next Up: Children’s Book Project

Our next Community Outreach effort will be to collect for the Children’s Book Project. You can learn more about it here: childrensbookproject.org/

Please bring your new or very gently used books to any game you have in San Mateo for the month of June. We will be collecting books there. Please remember these books are going to children in high need areas and we really want to support their love for and valuing of books. Please only donate books of condition and quality in service of those values.

From Children’s Book Project:

We always need new or gently used, recent-vintage books for children of all ages, from infants through teens.

We especially need:

  • board books
  • early readers
  • elementary chapter books
  • books in Spanish or Chinese
  • graphic novels
  • popular series for 8-12 year olds

We can’t use and don’t accept:

  • textbooks and curriculum materials
  • encyclopedias
  • audio cassettes and VHS tapes
  • library discards
  • obsolete books
  • dirty, dusty, wet, or mildewed books
  • nonfiction over ten years old

Please contact Eula at ncwhl.community@gmail.com if you have any questions! Thank you for helping our league make a positive impact on our community!
